Microsoft makes available updates for Windows 10 in the regular basis to patch any security hole and to improve the functionality of the operating system. However, even now that updates are mandatory to keep devices always up to date, sometimes updates may not appear for download on your computer for a long time.

My Windows 10 update (Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3197954)) has failed install something like 10-15 times. This usually results in a good hour where it tries to install the updates, fails, and then reverts everything back. I've tried cleaning up my laptop, run virus scans, etc, but nothing seems to help. Although Windows Update is the preferred method to get updates, Microsoft also allows users to manually download new patches as they become available through the 'Microsoft Update Catalog' website. While mainly a resource for IT administrators who need to test updates before pushing them to devices in their network, you can use the Update Catalog to quickly download a new update if it's not showing for you in Windows Update as an alternative option.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to find, download, and install updates manually on your device.

How to download cumulative updates

It's important to note that the Microsoft Update Catalog doesn't list anything, instead it's a search page, where you must know exactly the update you want to download.

The easiest way to find an update is knowing its Knowledge Base reference number. For example, on October 11th, Microsoft released Windows 10 build 14393.321, which Knowledge Base reference was KB3194798. You can find the references when we publish a new article about a new update, or when you visit the Windows 10 Update History website. Then do the following:

  1. Visit the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

Quick Tip: If you can't access the site using Microsoft Edge, you can also try opening a new InPrivate window, which should let you get through.

  2. Do a search for the update using the KB number for the update you want. For example, KB3194798.

  3. Click the Download button for the 64-bit or 32-bit version of the update. If you don't know your system type, do the following:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Click on System.
    3. Click on About.
    4. See System type.

  4. A pop-up window will appear with a direct download link, click it to download the .msu file.

How to install cumulative updates

While you can simply double-click the .msu file to install a new update for Windows 10, you may prefer to include options, such as to prevent the operating system from restarting to finish applying the update, which is something you can do using Command Prompt.

  1. Use the Windows key + I keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (admin).
  2. Type the following command and press Enter:

    wusa C:PATH-TO-UPDATENAME-OF-UPDATE.msu /quiet /norestart

Note: We're adding the /quiet /norestart switches to prevent the operating system from restarting your computer after installing the update, but later on, you must manually reboot your device to finish applying the update.

Hunter Bow: Unlocked by progressing through the main campaign. LK-1018: Successfully complete four Longinus quests. It is unlocked for free after saving the village in the main campaign. M133: Available for purchase after reaching the first store. Sleeping saints far cry 4.

Quick Tip: If the name of the update turns to be very long, simply begin typing 'Windows10.0-kb' and the hit the Tab key to autocomplete the name.

Wrapping things up

The Microsoft Update Catalog website works best using Internet Explorer, but recent changes that removes ActiveX requirement now allows users to access the site using Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Additionally, alongside cumulative updates, you can also download the latest updates for certain device drivers, and Surface updates.

It's worth pointing out that even though sometimes updates won't get through because of a problem on your computer, there will be other times when an update won't show up because it's not compatible with your system. If you install a patch that is not working correctly, you can always use our guide to uninstall a problematic update.

While we're focusing this guide on Windows 10, the same concept shown here works to download and install updates on previous versions of the operating system, including Windows 8.1 and Windows 7.

To fully address the issue, devices that have exceeded the disk space assignments should empty BranchCache using the netsh branchcache flushcommand.

SymptomWorkaround
For hosts managed by System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM), SCVMM cannot enumerate and manage logical switches deployed on the host after installing the update.

Additionally, if you do not follow the best practices, a stop error may occur in vfpext.sys on the hosts.

  1. Run mofcomp on the following mof files on the affected host:
    • Scvmmswitchportsettings.mof
    • VMMDHCPSvr.mof
  2. Follow the best practices while patching to avoid a stop error in vfpext.sys in an SDN v2 environment (NC managed hosts).
After installing KB4467684, the cluster service may fail to start with the error “2245 (NERR_PasswordTooShort)” if the group policy “Minimum Password Length” is configured with greater than 14 characters.Set the domain default 'Minimum Password Length' policy to less than or equal to 14 characters.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

After installing this update, there may be issues using the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) to start a device from a Windows Deployment Services (WDS) server configured to use Variable Window Extension. This may cause the connection to the WDS server to terminate prematurely while downloading the image. This issue does not affect clients or devices that are not using Variable Window Extension. To mitigate the issue, disable the Variable Window Extension on WDS server using one of the following options:

Option 1:
Open an Administrator Command prompt and type the following:

Wdsutil /Set-TransportServer /EnableTftpVariableWindowExtension:No

Option 2:
Use the Windows Deployment Services UI.

  1. Open Windows Deployment Services from Windows Administrative Tools.
  2. Expand Servers and right-click a WDS server.
  3. Open its properties and clear the Enable Variable Window Extension box on the TFTP tab.

Option 3:
Set the following registry value to 0:

“HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServicesWDSServerProvidersWDSTFTPEnableVariableWindowExtension”.

Restart the WDSServer service after disabling the Variable Window Extension.

Certain operations, such as rename, that you perform on files or folders that are on a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) may fail with the error, “STATUS_BAD_IMPERSONATION_LEVEL (0xC00000A5)”. This occurs when you perform the operation on a CSV owner node from a process that doesn’t have administrator privilege.Do one of the following:
  • Perform the operation from a process that has administrator privilege.
  • Perform the operation from a node that doesn’t have CSV ownership.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

After installing this update and restarting, some devices running Windows Server 2016 with Hyper-V enabled may enter Bitlocker recovery mode and receive an error, '0xC0210000'.

Note Windows 10, version 1607 may also be affected when Bitlocker and Hyper-V are enabled.

For a workaround for this issue, please see KB4505821.

Download Updates

Microsoft strongly recommends you install the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system before installing the latest cumulative update (LCU). SSUs improve the reliability of the update process to mitigate potential issues while installing the LCU. For more information, see Servicing stack updates.

If you are using Windows Update, the latest SSU (KB4498947) will be offered to you automatically. To get the standalone package for the latest SSU, search for it in the Microsoft Update Catalog.

To download these updates, open Settings - > Update &recovery and click on the Check for Updates button on the right.
